Best Personal Item Backpack: 4 Versatile Picks
For me, the best personal item backpack is one I can use after the flight, too—for exploring a city, getting to work or heading out on a hike.
This guide compares four versatile options, with everyday comfort, useful features and the 40 × 30 × 20 cm underseat format in mind. Some selected models have larger stated dimensions: the relevant measurement is the whole packed bag, including filled pockets.

✈️ Airplane luggage types: personal item vs carry-on
Airplane luggage falls into three main categories:
- 🎒 Cabin baggage — travels with you in the cabin.
- 🧳 Checked baggage — travels in the aircraft hold.
- 🎿 Special baggage — sports equipment and other items with separate handling rules.
For this guide, the key distinction is between a carry-on and a personal item, also called underseat luggage.
🎒 Carry-on: the larger cabin bag
- Stored in the overhead bin.
- Usually a suitcase, travel bag or larger backpack.
- Size and inclusion in the fare depend on the airline and ticket.
👜 Personal item: the bag under your seat
- A small backpack, handbag or laptop bag stored under the seat in front of you.
- My focus here: one practical backpack for the flight and the activities afterwards.
🇺🇸 Personal items on US airlines
- American Airlines: personal item up to 18 × 14 × 8 in (45 × 35 × 20 cm); separate carry-on up to 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm). These are the airline’s published units.
- Delta: one carry-on and one personal item included. Its personal-item guidance specifies a bag that fits under the seat without a separate numerical size limit in that section.
📐 A 40x30x20 backpack for Ryanair and Wizz Air
- Ryanair: one included underseat bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm (approximately 15.7 × 11.8 × 7.9 in). Its cited small-bag policy gives no separate weight limit.
- Wizz Air: the same 40 × 30 × 20 cm format, up to 10 kg / 22 lb. Its dimensions exclude handles and wheels; wheels may add up to 5 cm.
- easyJet: an included small cabin bag up to 45 × 36 × 20 cm (17.7 × 14.2 × 7.9 in), including handles and wheels, and 15 kg / 33 lb.
Official rules: American Airlines · Delta · Ryanair · Wizz Air · easyJet.
📋 What should an ideal 40 × 30 × 20 cm backpack offer?
My universal backpack criteria. Prioritize them however suits you best.
| 📐 Packed dimensions | I prefer a pack I can load lightly and roll down for the flight, then expand afterwards. A rigid back panel or laptop can limit compression. |
|---|---|
| ↔️ Adjustable capacity | A roll-top closure and stretchy side or front pockets. |
| 💻 Laptop compartment | A dedicated laptop compartment for work and city use. |
| 🗃️ Full-zip access | Access from at least one side, so I do not have to unpack everything through the top. |
| 💲 Price | Good value for money, with the features I will actually use. |
| ➕ Extra straps and pockets | Shoulder-strap pockets, gear attachments and basic internal organisation. |
| 🪶 Weight | Roughly 0.5–1 kg / 1.1–2.2 lb, depending on construction and use. |
| 👁️ Appearance | A minimalist, understated and versatile design. |
🎒 The backpack shortlist
Choose the pack that best suits your main activity.
1. Quechua NH500 Escape Rolltop 23L
🏙️ My pick for city life, work and day hikes
A practical, comfortable roll-top backpack with an understated design that works for commuting, travel and time outdoors.
- Roll-top closure: approximately 42–58 cm / 16.5–22.8 in rolled height on my original pack.
- 23–27 L capacity and 13 pockets, including five zipped pockets and a hidden pocket.
- Raised compartments for a 15-inch laptop and 13-inch tablet.
- A phone pocket on the right shoulder strap and stretchy bottle pockets.
- Suitcase-handle strap, internal organiser, battery pocket with cable opening and a light attachment point.
🛠️ My modifications: I sewed straps onto the front and replaced the silver buckle with a black one.
📐 Listed dimensions: 46 × 28 × 22 cm / 18.1 × 11 × 8.7 in—larger than 40 × 30 × 20 cm. My rolled-height range is an observation of my original pack, not a verified packed minimum.

4. A custom-made backpack
🪡 A pack built around your needs
If standard packs do not offer the layout you want, commissioning your own design is another option.
Agree the external dimensions, capacity, weight, pockets and access with the maker. A laptop sleeve, shoulder-strap pockets or specific gear attachments can be part of the brief.
- Filip Raboch — handmade packs from Prague; contact the maker about a custom build.
- Arch Industries — another maker featured in the original article; current order availability is unconfirmed.
This is usually the more expensive route, but it lets you prioritise the features that matter to you.

❓ Personal item backpack FAQs
What size backpack fits under an airplane seat?
Use the personal-item allowance published by your airline, not just a bag’s advertised capacity. American Airlines publishes 18 × 14 × 8 inches; Ryanair and Wizz Air use 40 × 30 × 20 cm. The complete packed bag must fit the permitted space.
Can a hiking backpack be used as a personal item?
Yes, if its complete packed size and weight meet your flight’s allowance. A hiking label neither qualifies nor disqualifies it. What matters is the external size with your actual load, including full pockets, and any parts that cannot compress.
Can a roll-top backpack be larger when fully expanded?
A roll-top can let you carry a smaller load for the flight and expand the bag afterwards. However, rolling the top changes mainly the height: a laptop, rigid insert or filled pockets may keep the bag too wide or deep. Measure all three dimensions in its travel configuration.
Can the same backpack work for Ryanair and Wizz Air?
Both currently publish a 40 × 30 × 20 cm allowance for the included underseat bag. A bag within those dimensions may therefore suit both, but Wizz Air also specifies a 10 kg limit and the other conditions are not identical. Check each booking and measure the whole bag rather than just its main compartment.
How many litres is a 40 × 30 × 20 cm bag?
A rectangular box of those dimensions has a volume of 24 litres. A backpack is not a perfect box, and manufacturers measure capacity in different ways, sometimes including pockets. A 23 L label does not prove external compliance, and a larger nominal capacity does not tell you its minimum usable packed size.
🏁 Which backpack suits your trips?
My choice for city life, work and day hikes is the Quechua. I would look at AONIJIE for fastpacking, Nitro for winter sports and a custom-made pack for requirements the standard options cannot meet.
