I’m not saying I never buy expensive gear – it always depends on the specific product, your needs and your budget. The best approach is to map the whole market and weigh all the options. If you don’t want to spend hours on that, this article is for you.

Buy only what you really need, and pick versatile pieces that work for more than one sport.

Sewing is easier than it looks. Try to modify or adjust older outdoor gear and then maybe make the whole thing yourself! You save money and grams.
- Smart local shopping
Look for gear that doesn’t carry the expensive “ultralight” label but is light anyway. Then make it even lighter.
- Big online stores and sales – don’t be afraid to shop abroad
AliExpress, Decathlon, Sport Conrad, Tradeinn or Amazon often have much better prices than your local shops. In Europe, Zalando Lounge sells mostly clothing, but also shoes and sports gear, often with 50 % off or more.
- Second hand
Vinted keeps growing in Europe, and your local online marketplace is always worth a look. Ask your friends too – people have lots of gear they don’t use.
- Combine
Use all of these together – for example second hand + modification + sewing. There are no limits to creativity.

Minimalism – less is more
- Think about whether you really need the item. Give the decision some time and you’ll avoid impulse purchases.
- Less material = less weight, which has more value for us.
- Less often means a simpler product = cheaper.
- The less stuff you own, the fewer worries you have and the more time you can devote to yourself and others.
Versatility – thinking outside the box
- Can you replace some of your gear, or use something you already have for that purpose? A lot of outdoor gear can be used across different sports – you just might not have thought about it yet. Forget about pigeonholing.
- Buy versatile pieces of outdoor gear = less gear.
Modification – cut what you don’t need
Remove the parts of your gear you don’t use. Just make sure you keep the functionality you need – and enjoy the lightness.

- Almost everyone has a sewing machine in the family. Try a smaller project on an older piece of gear and then move on to something bigger.

I chose it because I spend most of my time outdoors in warm climates – hiking, bikepacking, and sleeping in huts or shelters. It also works perfectly as a light comfort layer in heated mountain huts during winter trips.
The quoted 442 g / 15.6 oz weight is for the Regular version.
In summer temperatures, it performs great on its own. If you combine it with a liner or insulated clothing, you can comfortably extend its temperature range.
My experience after long-term use:

✅ How to buy cheap backpacking gear online: 4 criteria
If you want to be happy with your purchase, the gear should meet a few criteria. Choose wisely.
- Simple material and construction – cheap product = common (cheap) material + simple construction. The simpler, the better.
- Customer reviews – look for reviews from regular people with personal experience. Yes, you are in the right place.
- Seller reviews – check the rating and history of the seller itself.
- A suspiciously cheap offer – if the price seems to be below production costs, something is probably wrong. Estimate the price: difficulty of mass production + material. Big online stores often have low marketing and distribution costs, though, so they really can be cheaper.

Don’t be afraid to shop abroad – it’s easy these days and often much cheaper. Just always check shipping, possible import duties and the return policy for your country.

A huge selection and lots of reliable “Chinese” brands. I have been shopping here for years and never had a bigger problem. Decathlon
Very good value for money, and in many countries you can visit a physical store and try things on, or order online.
Zalando Lounge
My newest tip if you live in Europe. Their flash sales have really brutal discounts – often 50 % off or more. It’s mostly clothing, but you’ll also find shoes, ski and bike helmets, gloves, jerseys and backpacks. I bought Altra running shoes there at a big discount. The catch: a sale usually lasts only a few days, then the brand disappears and comes back after a while, so you have to check regularly. You need a free account to shop.
Sport Conrad
A German online store shipping across Europe and beyond. Very good outlet deals on a large part of their outdoor range – worth it mainly for more expensive branded gear, where shipping doesn’t matter much.
Tradeinn and Amazon
Both often have good prices on Altra shoes and other branded gear (Amazon often with free shipping and returns, depending on your country). Prices change, so always compare them including shipping.
Used outdoor gear: Vinted and local marketplaces
In Europe, Vinted keeps growing and its selection gets bigger every year. Elsewhere, try your local online marketplace or classifieds site, Facebook Marketplace or used gear sections of outdoor retailers. Search outside the outdoor categories too – you’ll often find better deals there.
eBay – I don’t use it much anymore, because sellers with good offers are more often on AliExpress, but my experience has been mostly fine.
