Hidden MTB Trails: Best Mountain Biking in Europe Off the Beaten Path 🚵
Tired of crowded bike parks, lift queues and trails where you know every corner by heart? 🚵 This is my list of hidden MTB trails in Europe – places that are truly unique and nothing like a typical forest trail or bike park. It’s not just about flow, it’s about the landscape and an experience you won’t forget. 🌄
For me, the best mountain biking in Europe is about exploring and adventure. I rode and filmed every trail here myself – often without meeting a single other rider. They work for a mountain bike holiday or as a stop on a road trip by car or van. 🚐
Instead of groomed tracks you’ll find mostly natural singletrack trails and full-day rides in Spain, France, Norway and on the Czech–Slovak border – plus one bonus trail by the sea in Mexico. The list keeps growing with new MTB trails. Let’s ride! 🔥
▶️ A short video for every trail + all key info in one place.
Each trail comes with a short video of my ride, plus the start, difficulty, time, distance, elevation gain, warnings, tips and a link to the route (Mapy.com, Trailforks or Trailguide). In a minute you’ll know whether the trail is for you. 🚵

📅 Best time for mountain biking in Europe
- 🇨🇿🇸🇰 Javorníky: spring to autumn; after longer rain expect mud in the forest.
- 🇪🇸 Spain (Aragon, Teruel): spring, autumn and mild winter days. In summer the canyons and dry ridges are scorching hot and there’s no water on the trails.
- 🇫🇷 Terres Noires: spring and autumn. The black soil is dusty when dry and slippery as soap after rain – go a few days after it rains.
- 🇳🇴 Norway: summer. The rock slabs are best when dry; after rain they’re much harder to ride.
- 🇲🇽 Mexico (Sayulita): the dry season, roughly November to April – I rode there in January. Summer is the hot and rainy season.
💡 Tip: Check the weather on Windy.com and current trail conditions and closures on Trailforks or Trailguide.
🇨🇿🇸🇰 Hidden singletrack in the Czech Republic & Slovakia
Javorníky – a ridge on the Czech–Slovak border
🌲 A quick taste of the Javorníky ridge by bike
The Javorníky ridge along the Czech–Slovak border offers natural singletrack along the mountain ridge, through forests and meadows with wide views. These are my home trails. 🌿
📍 Start: on the Czech side e.g. Velké Karlovice or Kohútka, on the Slovak side Podjavorník or Makov – Kasárne
🟦 Difficulty: intermediate (depending on the route)
🔁 Loop: There are many ways to ride the ridge – climb up from the Czech or Slovak side and build a loop to suit your mood and fitness.
💡 Tip: On holidays and sunny weekends the ridge can get fairly busy. Then I’d rather go for the Mariková singletrack below the ridge.
🇪🇸 Mountain biking in Spain: hidden trails
Aragon – Jaraba canyon
🏜️ Secret MTB trail in a Spanish canyon | Jaraba
Unique mountain biking in a canyon that hardly anyone knows about. The singletrack takes you through the Cañada de Campillo canyon between rock walls all the way to the monastery. 🤯
📍 Start and parking: by the road near the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Jaraba monastery
🟦 Difficulty: intermediate, or beginner
🔁 Loop: ride a quiet road to the village of Calmarza, continue on a dirt road to point 5 on the map where the trail starts, then descend the canyon back to the monastery and your car.
➡️ Easier option: get dropped off in Calmarza and ride just the canyon descent to the monastery.
⚠️ Watch out: Near the start you have to carry the bike down a few iron rungs (about 2 m / 6.5 ft). Easy with two people, doable solo. With an e-bike, only with two stronger riders helping each other. Some sections can be overgrown with bushes.
💡 Tip: Ride it downhill – from Calmarza to the monastery, the opposite direction to the video.
Teruel – Morrón de Olba
🌄 Magical Morrón de Olba | Abandoned trails in Teruel
Escape the crowds to the forgotten landscape around the village of Olba, where nature is taking back the abandoned terraces. Tough climbs, playful descents and panoramic views of untouched Spanish wilderness – and only you on the trail. 🌲
📍 Start and parking: the village of Olba (Teruel, Aragon), about an hour’s drive from the coast near Valencia
🟦 Difficulty: intermediate
🪨 Terrain: rocky singletrack with limestone, dirt and gravel
⚠️ Watch out: There’s no water on the trail – bring plenty, plus sun protection. Summer isn’t worth it because of the heat.
💡 Tip: The area is part of the ENDUROLAND MTB project, so there are plenty of other trails for several days of riding – a perfect winter MTB holiday destination.
🇫🇷 Mountain biking in France: unique trails
Terres Noires – Digne-les-Bains
The Black Earth (Terres Noires) in the Haute-Provence Geological Reserve looks like another planet: bare ridges of black marl that you ride like a roller coaster. It’s a well-known spot among enduro riders, but the terrain is absolutely unique – some of the best mountain biking in Europe if you love exploring. Plan your loop to suit you – the trails can be linked by forest roads, and you’ll find inspiration in the official MTB loops from Digne-les-Bains.
🖤 Black Earth trails | Toboggan and Crêtes de Saint-Jean
The two most famous Black Earth trails near Digne-les-Bains. For me the best one is the Toboggan – long, loads of fun and not overly difficult. The most iconic is the Crêtes de Saint-Jean. Both trails can be combined into one day. 🌘
🎢 Black Earth Toboggan | A roller coaster of black earth
The famous “toboggans” in the heart of the Terres Noires: smooth berms and rollers of black clay where the bike picks up speed on its own. Pure fun from start to finish.
📍 Start: Digne-les-Bains or nearby villages (depending on the loop)
🔺 Difficulty: advanced
⚠️ Watch out: The official loops through the Terres Noires are rated very difficult – lots of climbing, technical sections and little shade. After rain the black soil is extremely slippery.
💡 Tip: The toboggans are part of loop VTT n°21 Randuro des Terres Noires from Digne-les-Bains, which you can shorten to ride only selected enduro sections. A GPX is available on the loop’s page.
🌑 Crêtes de Saint-Jean | The most iconic Terres Noires trail
Riding sharp ridges of black earth with the slope dropping away on both sides. Moon-like views and a trail you’ll never forget.
📍 Start: Digne-les-Bains or nearby villages (depending on the loop)
♦♦ Difficulty: very difficult
⚠️ Watch out: In places the trail follows a very narrow ridge with steep drops on both sides – think twice in wind or after rain. If you’re not sure, walk your bike for a bit.
💡 Tip: The ridges and the toboggans can be combined into one day. For inspiration see loops VTT n°15 Les crêtes de Draix and n°17 Les Terres Noires.
🇳🇴 Mountain biking in Norway: unique trails
Telemark – Valefjell
🪨 MTB on giant rock slabs | Valefjell, Telemark
A descent down giant rock slabs in the middle of the Norwegian wilderness. Much of the trail runs on smooth granite where your tyres grip like glue – a feeling you won’t get anywhere else. 🇳🇴
📍 Start and parking: at the end of a gravel road – turn off at a small green sign from road RV41, about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) south of the Agder/Telemark county border (Åmli / Nissedal)
🟦 Difficulty: intermediate
⚠️ Watch out: The descent is rough in places and wet rock is slippery – after rain ride carefully or wait for the slabs to dry.
💡 Tip: Trailguide has the GPX to download and 11 more trails nearby.
🌎 Bonus: beyond Europe – mountain biking in Mexico
Sayulita – jungle trails by the Pacific
🌴 Jungle singletrack down to a quiet beach | Sayulita, Mexico
Jungle singletrack right above the Pacific, just north of Sayulita. The best part? You simply ride out of town into the hills and finish on a quiet, little-visited beach. 🏖️
I spent a month here as part of a volunteer community that maintains the trails. The trail network is run and maintained by Wildmex, a local company that also rents bikes, including e-bikes.
📍 Start: straight from Sayulita – the trails are just north of town
💡 Tip: Ride in the dry season and bring your swimsuit for the beach at the end.
🎒 MTB gear for hidden trails
On hidden trails far from civilisation it pays to be self-sufficient. A trail or all-mountain bike with grippy tyres is enough for all the MTB trails in this article.
✅ MTB trip checklist:
- ⛑️ MTB helmet – for the technical descents of Terres Noires consider a full-face helmet.
- 🧤 MTB gloves – I compared cheap vs. branded gloves after 3 years in a short video (in Czech).
- 👟 Bike shoes with a good sole – in Jaraba and on the ridges you’ll push and carry your bike too. I ride in Five Ten Trailcross Mid.
- 💧 Plenty of water – in Spain and on the Terres Noires there’s nothing along the way.
- ☀️ Sun protection and cycling glasses.
- 🔧 Spare tube, pump and multitool – rocky trails destroy tyres.
- 🔦 A light in case the ride takes longer than planned – see my picks for the best headlamp for hiking.
- 📱 Offline route on your phone – in some remote spots (e.g. the Jaraba canyon) there’s often no signal.
❓ FAQ: hidden MTB trails in Europe
Where is the best mountain biking in Europe?
The best mountain biking in Europe depends on what you enjoy. Famous destinations like Finale Ligure, Portes du Soleil or the Dolomites have huge trail networks and lifts, but also crowds. I prefer exploring unique, exceptional places that aren’t mainstream or overhyped – often with no one else around – like the Jaraba canyon, the Black Earth of Terres Noires or the granite slabs of Valefjell.
What are some popular bike trails in Europe?
The best-known include Finale Ligure in Italy, Portes du Soleil and Morzine in France and Switzerland, Saalbach-Leogang in Austria, Madeira in Portugal and Rychleby Trails in the Czech Republic. If you’d rather have a trail to yourself, try the hidden trails in this article.
When is the best time for mountain biking in Spain?
Spring, autumn and mild winter days. In summer inland Aragon is very hot and there’s no water on the trails. More in best time to go.
Can you ride Terres Noires on an e-bike?
Yes – and here an e-bike is more of an advantage. The loops have lots of climbing and little shade, so the motor saves your energy for the fun part: the black-earth toboggans and ridges. On the narrow Crêtes de Saint-Jean just ride carefully, and when in doubt, walk a short section.
Do I need a permit to ride these trails?
No, you don’t need a permit for any of the trails in this article. Just respect local signs and closures (check Trailforks or Trailguide) and leave no trace. In Norway the right to roam (allemannsretten) applies.
What bike do I need for these trails?
A full-suspension trail or all-mountain bike with good tyres is enough. For Terres Noires and technical enduro descents a bike with more travel is a plus – and above all good brakes. The first time I rode Terres Noires my brakes started acting up and I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as on my later rides.
Can I ride the Jaraba canyon on an e-bike?
Probably not solo. At the start you have to carry the bike down iron rungs about 2 m (6.5 ft) high, which is very hard with a heavy e-bike. Two stronger riders helping each other can manage it. More in the Jaraba canyon box.
Enjoy the best mountain biking in Europe without the crowds and leave nature the way you found it. 🚵✨
